FAQ

Can I buy extra baggage online after booking?

No. Surinam Airways does not publish an online self-service flow for extra baggage. Prepaid excess baggage is paid in advance at an SLM booking office or an authorized travel agent; otherwise excess charges are paid at airport check-in.

Where do I buy extra baggage?

Pay the prepaid rate at an SLM booking office or an authorized travel agent before departure, or pay the airport excess rate at check-in. Rate tables are linked on the Excess Baggage tab of the official Baggage page.

How does the airline calculate extra baggage charges?

Excess baggage rates apply one-way per flight operated by SLM. If several excess rates apply to your baggage (extra piece plus overweight plus oversized), all applicable rates are added together. Euro-denominated rates apply only to travel from Amsterdam (Mid-Atlantic) or from Cayenne (regional/special baggage).

Is it cheaper to pay for extra baggage in advance vs at the airport?

Yes. On flights between Paramaribo and Amsterdam, paying excess baggage costs in advance at an SLM booking office or authorized travel agent gives a discount of USD 25.00 or EUR 25.00 off the airport excess baggage rates.

How many extra bags can I buy, and what are the bag limits?

Economy passengers with a 1-piece allowance may bring up to 4 extra pieces; with a 2-piece allowance up to 3 extra pieces. Business Class passengers may bring up to 3 extra pieces; further pieces travel as cargo subject to space. Carriage of the extra pieces on the passenger's own flight depends on available space.

When is the deadline to buy extra baggage?

Prepaid excess baggage must be paid before departure at an SLM booking office or an authorized travel agent; the airline publishes no fixed cutoff time. Otherwise excess charges are payable at airport check-in.

What are the overweight or oversized baggage rules?

Bags weighing 26-32 kg over the free allowance incur an overweight charge (USD/EUR 100 on Amsterdam routes, USD 25-100 on US/regional routes, USD 10.00 per kg on Belem routes). Oversized bags incur USD/EUR 275 on Amsterdam routes and USD 100 on other routes. Any piece over 32 kg (70 lbs) is not accepted as baggage and must travel as freight via the SLM Cargo Department.

Do partner-operated or codeshare flights have different baggage rules?

If another airline operates the longest (most significant) stretch of an interline journey, that airline's baggage rules may also apply to the Surinam Airways sectors. If Surinam Airways operates the longest stretch, its rules and charges apply. This rule does not apply to journeys to or from the USA.

Are there any important exceptions or restrictions I should know?

Extra pieces are carried subject to available space and may travel on a later flight or as cargo. Cycling, surfboard and scuba equipment must meet packing rules (e.g. bicycle in a cardboard container with pedals removed or protected, tires deflated; scuba tanks accepted only empty with valve open or removed). Sporting firearms are accepted under stated packing and ammunition limits.
